What a Man Really Wants to Say About Relationships | J. Riggins

Excerpt from Chapter 6 – “Family’s Influences on Your Relationship”:

Family is supposed to be our sunshine in dim places, but
sometimes when it comes to our relationships they can be
that unpaid electric bill. I don’t want to talk about the idiosyncrasies
of family as a whole, because that can be an entirely different
book. I really want to talk about the influence families have
on a couple’s relationships. Unfortunately, there are some parents,
siblings, cousins, grandparents, etc. that give other family
members advice or are involved in their relationships for the
wrong reasons. These culprits may either want to gain something
from giving bad advice, or they just are being messy. There may
even be the fact that these other family members may have no
clue on how a good relationship works, so any advice will automatically
be tainted. Most of us did not receive a handbook on
how relationships are supposed to work. There are many things
about relationships that are self-taught, and some we may learn
from others. The difference between a failed relationship and one
that works could be whom we let into our relationships. Sometimes
figuring that out may be really easy to do, or sometimes it
may be extremely difficult. It is always good to receive advice
from a family member that may have been through a situation
like we are about to go through. Just remember, take any advice
from family or friends with a grain of salt. You can’t believe or do
everything someone tells you, even family, because no one has all
of the right answers.
